Popular pro bono legal service LawRight raised more than $80,000 at its Red Wine for Justice gala on 14 October to help provide access to justice for the community’s most disadvantaged.
LawRight on Friday circulated a ‘thank-you’ statement to its supporters for raising $53,000 via the auction of 44 lots – which included the sale of the night’s premier wine, a bottle of 2008 Penfolds Grange Vintage, for a staggering $7050.
“We are especially grateful to our entertaining guest speaker, Justice Peter Applegarth AM, and to our special volunteers – our MC Bridget O’Brien, sommelier Andrew Buchanan and auctioneer Yianni Mooney,” the statement said.
“All funds raised will enable LawRight to continue our financial counselling service for the rest of the financial year.
“Thank you to those who donated wines for drinking, auction and raffling, and to those who bid generously for our 44 auction lots.”
Other lots up for auction included a picnic for eight with LawRight President and former judge the Honourable Roslyn Atkinson AO, and former solicitor-turned-Supreme Court Senior Judge Administrator Ann Lyons.
Another offered a high tea for five with former Court of Appeal President and current Women’s Safety and Justice Taskforce chair the Honourable Margaret McMurdo AC, and Queensland’s first woman Supreme Court judge appointed in April 1992, the Honourable Margaret White AO.
