The importance of presenting a client’s subjective case will be highlighted by the Downs and South Western Queensland Law Association at a free event in Toowoomba next week.
In conjunction with Queen’s Arms Chambers, the association will host a panel discussion on the Bugmy Bar Book on Wednesday, 28 August.
The book is a free, evidence-based book for lawyers, legal decision makers and policy makers which is based on the sentencing principles established by Bugmy v The Queen in 2013. It contains summaries of key research about the impacts of trauma, socio-economic inequality, structural disadvantage and strengths-based rehabilitation.
Supreme Court Justices Peter Callaghan and Lincoln Crowley (pictured) will introduce the event; and Elder and ATSILS Field Officer Lonnie Duncan will speak about lived experiences that tie into Bugmy principles.
The panel will include District Court Judge Horneman-Wren SC, Legal Aid Deputy Public Defender Charlotte Smith, and ATSILS Queensland Criminal Law Director Lewis Shilli.
This CPD event will be held at 5.30pm at The Burke and Wills Hotel, and livestreamed. Register here.
