SMSF Specialist Advisor Scott Hay-Bartlem got the QLS Succession and Elder Law Conference off to a vibrant start in Brisbane on Friday.
Dressed in a bright green blazer – in preparation for attending the musical Wicked after the conference – and making references to 1989 dark comedy Weekend at Bernie’s, Scott brought levity to his keynote address at voco hotel.
His presentation, Last-minute moves – risks and rewards of death bed superannuation withdrawals, was chaired by Mitchells Solicitors Principal Bryan Mitchell, an Accredited Specialist (Succession Law) and QLS Succession Law Policy Committee Deputy Chair.
“I regularly tell my succession clients I need at least a month, preferably three months’ notice of their death, so we can sort their super out,” Scott joked.
“The 4 o’clock Friday afternoon telephone call is one of those things that Lexon does not want you to take, because there are many, many ways that the death bed withdrawal completely stuffs up a whole lot of things.”
The session was the first of many across the day-long conference, which covered topics including elder law, estate planning, estate administration and estate litigation.
