When is it okay to defend yourself using violence? Is it okay to respond violently when provoked?
The Queensland Law Reform Commission (QLRC) will present public responses to these questions at its free Community Attitudes to Defences in Homicide and Assault Cases and the Penalty for Murder in Queensland – Survey Findings Webinar next week.
The Commission, alongside an Australian National University (ANU) research team, surveyed almost 2500 adult Queenslanders as part of a project to understand community views on particular defences in the Criminal Code and the mandatory penalty of life imprisonment for murder.
This survey was a Queensland first and will help the Commission to develop law reform recommendations for a review of particular criminal defences, due to be tabled by 1 December 2025.
The ANU research team will present the findings in the webinar, hosted by QLRC Deputy Chair Judge Anthony Rafter SC, on Monday, 2 December, 2024 from 1pm to 2pm. Register here.
