“You’re just too good to be true…” sang the massive crowd at the Brisbane Riverstage on Thursday night, where the Pub Choir raised a whopping $146,000 for the Women’s Legal Service Queensland (WLSQ).
More than 7000 voices combined to sing Frankie Valli’s Can’t Take My Eyes Off You and other tunes at the annual Christmas fundraiser for the WLSQ, which is commemorating 40 years of providing free legal advice to help women and children escape domestic and family violence.
WLSQ CEO Nadia Bromley said the festive season, a happy time for many in our community, could be especially difficult for women and children experiencing domestic and family violence.
“The money raised at Pub Choir is vital to helping us assist more women when they reach out for help,” Nadia said.
“For more than four decades, our organisation has ardently pursued a commitment to supporting women and children.
“Our aim is for every woman who reaches out for help to be answered, heard and supported.
“I think that’s a wish that everyone hopes will come true, because every woman deserves a chance for a safe future with her children.”
Pub Choir Director Astrid Jorgensen said working with WLSQ for the Christmas fundraiser was the highlight of every year.
“To teach seven thousand people under the night sky at Riverstage, along with a symphony orchestra (who are playing the music for the first time at the show), and raising thousands of dollars for charity…the endorphins are insane!” Astrid said.
“What a way to finish the year: making music together and making good for Queensland women and children.”
