Judge Jarro honoured as QUT 2020 Indigenous Alumnus

District Court Judge Nathan Jarro has been named as the QUT Indigenous Alumnus of the Year.

Judge Jarro, who graduated from QUT with a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Business (Accountancy) in 2000, was called to the Bar in 2004 and in 2018 was appointed to the District Court of Queensland, making him the state’s first Indigenous judge and the second in Australia.

Judge Jarro was appointed to the Queensland Civil and Administration Tribunal (QCAT) in 2009 and presided over minor civil disputes and the human rights divisions. In 2009 he was also appointed to the Children Services Tribunal and also served on the Mental Health Review Tribunal.

Judge Jarro, who identifies as Ghangulu on his father’s side and with connections to Bidjara on his mother’s, acted as a part-time member of the Aboriginal Land Tribunal in 2015 and was an Indigenous representative on the QUT Council from 2008 to 2012.

QUT Faculty of Law Executive Dean Professor Dan Hunter said Judge Jarro’s contributions to the legal profession and his community demonstrated commitment, ambition and integrity.

“He is a role model for other young aspiring and practising Indigenous lawyers who has demonstrated core values congruent with QUT’s throughout his career and in his commitment to the university, Indigenous and wider communities,” Professor Hunter said.
