QLS announces Council election results

The results of Queensland Law Society’s 2021 Council election have been declared.

This year, the presidential positions were uncontested, but an election was necessary for the eight Councillor positions as there were 17 nominations for eight available positions.

2021 QLS President Elizabeth Shearer has welcomed the 2022-23 Council.

“The 2021 election saw a good response, with more than 1300 members voting over the election period,” Ms Shearer said.

“I would like to congratulate 2022 President Kara Thomson, 2022 Deputy President Michael Brennan and 2022-23 Vice President Chloe Kopilovic, who were all elected unopposed. Each of them has served three terms on Council, and brings a depth of expertise to their new roles.

“I am also very pleased to welcome our eight elected ordinary Councillors: Samantha Bolton, Allison Caputo, Michele Davis, Genevieve Dee, Sheetal Deo, Bridie Edwards, Peter Jolly and Rebecca Pezzutti.

“Alison and Rebecca are re-elected after serving one term, and Genevieve served for two terms previously. Peter is the Chair of the QLS Specialist Accreditation Board. Samantha and Michelle have each served as district law association Presidents. Sheetal’s work in diversity and inclusion will bring an important perspective to Council and Bridie brings the experiences of an early career lawyer. We are fortunate to have a good mix of experience and fresh perspectives.

“QLS Council plays a vital role within Queensland’s legal profession. The Council exercises important statutory functions and sets the strategy for the Society to ensure QLS meets the need of our legal profession. It is very encouraging that so many people were willing to put themselves forward for election, and I would like to thank all the candidates.”

The QLS Council election is held biannually, and this election determined who will serve on Council for the next two-year term, commencing 1 January 2022.
