Sunshine Coast lawyers from the not-for-profit and commercial sectors will swap suits for board shorts and offices for blue skies for the inaugural ‘Law at the Beach’ this Saturday 21 May at Bukh Park, Alexandra Headland, from 9am to 1pm.
The community event, run by the Regional Legal Assistance Forum (RLAF), is designed to showcase the range of free legal and allied services available on the Sunshine Coast, and make the legal profession more accessible to the public.
Suncoast Community Legal Service Managing Solicitor Julian Porter said the event would aim to “demystify the legal and allied sector and encourage people to not be afraid to ask for help”.
“Often people are in shock when a legal problem occurs and they just don’t know where to start,” Julian said. “There are actually more free services available than you might think, and plenty of people are able to manage their affairs with a bit of help in the right direction.
“Pop in for a few minutes and grab some brochures, or stay all morning for the expert talks and music from Andrea Kirwin.”
Law at the Beach will be a fun, interactive morning by the water with live music, legal information sessions and displays, and legal health checks. Attendees will be able to talk one-on-one with lawyers practising in family law, elder law, wills and estates, personal injuries and commercial law.
Information displays will also be available on the day from the eight RLAF organisations; Legal Aid Qld, Suncoast Community Legal Service, ATSILS (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Service (Qld) Ltd), Sunshine Coast Law Association, Relationships Australia Queensland Senior Relationship Services, Uniting Care Family Mediation Services, Salvation Army Financial Counselling Services and QSTARS tenancy advice service.
Law Week (16-23 May), held each year to raise awareness of the Queensland legal system, gives the community an opportunity to learn about the wide range of legal services on offer.
